Abandoned Cart Reminder Template: Check Before You Send

A cart reminder can be outdated before it is sent. The shopper may have ordered already, the price or stock may have changed, or the team may not know who owns the cart.
Use this record to check the cart first, send one useful reminder only when contact is appropriate, and stop when the situation changes. A small team can complete it in a document or spreadsheet before setting up any automated journey.

How to fill the record
- Use the cart ID and event time from the current checkout source. Time passing never overrides a later order.
- Contact only an identified shopper through an allowed route. Keep an anonymous cart anonymous.
- Check permission and do-not-contact conditions again before every message.
- Look for an existing order, then check the current cart, price, stock, and delivery information.
- Give the message one job: restore the checkout context and offer help. Do not invent urgency, scarcity, a discount, or a delivery promise.
- Stop pending reminders after an order, cart change, reply, help case, opt-out, invalid contact, or repeated delivery failure.
Mailchimp documents a vendor journey with a cart trigger, delay, and message. It illustrates a mechanism; it does not prove recovery performance or another platform's features. Review the mechanism.
Filled fictional example: delivery date unavailable
Every cart, product, price, date, and message below is fictional and illustrative.
Cart ID and event time: C-552; checkout recorded at 09:20 ICT on 15 August 2026
Shopper identity and contact route: Email entered during this checkout; cart-to-shopper match checked
Permission and do-not-contact checks: Email permitted; no opt-out or open complaint
Current cart items: One fictional item, SKU-18
Existing order or duplicate check: No order or duplicate cart found at the final check
Current price, stock, and delivery information: Displayed price USD 48; item available; delivery date unavailable
Purpose of the reminder: Restore the cart and offer help with delivery information
Reminder message: “Your cart still contains SKU-18 at the currently displayed price. A delivery date is not available. Continue checkout or reply for help.”
Help owner and context to pass: Ecommerce service inbox receives C-552, SKU-18, the delivery uncertainty, and the shopper's reply
When to stop pending reminders: Order created, cart changed or expired, reply received, help case opened, opt-out, invalid contact, or two delivery failures
What to do if delivery fails: Stop; keep the cart record; alert the email owner
Proof of completion and review owner: Final cart or order result and message outcome saved; ecommerce operations checks stale product details, duplicates, and complaints weekly
The exception is the missing delivery date. The message says that plainly and offers help instead of promising a date.
Quality check before use
- The cart event, shopper identity, and contact permission are current.
- An order lookup runs immediately before each message.
- Price, stock, promotion, and delivery wording match approved sources.
- The help owner receives the cart details and any uncertainty.
- Purchase, reply, cart change, and do-not-contact status cancel pending work.
- Applicable sender and unsubscribe controls are checked.
Google's current sender guidance is one source for applicable email authentication, subscription, monitoring, and unsubscribe controls. It does not replace legal review. Review the guidance.
Common mistakes
| Mistake | Better treatment |
|---|---|
| Inventing scarcity or a discount | Use only current, approved price, stock, and promotion details. |
| Messaging after purchase | Check for an order immediately before every send. |
| Treating every cart as an identified person | Require an allowed contact route and a reliable match. |
| Hiding delivery uncertainty | State the gap and offer a help route. |
What to do next
Test completed-order, changed-price, changed-stock, anonymous, opt-out, delivery-unknown, and delivery-failed cases. When an order is complete, move to the post-purchase message template.
